There's a fantasy that independence means building your own version of everything. Your own product, your own platform, your own category. It's a beautiful story and an expensive one.
The faster path is less romantic: attach yourself to the companies already winning, and become the reason their product reaches businesses they'd never reach on their own.
What the leaders are actually short on
They are not short on capital, engineering, or brand. They are short on last-mile placement — people who can sit in front of a mid-sized business, understand its operations, and configure the right solution.
That gap is where an independent operator gets paid. You're not competing with their engineering team. You're doing the work their engineering team can't do from a desk.
Choosing who to stand behind
Pick partners the way you'd pick an employer, minus the loyalty. Does the product actually work? Is the commission structure documented? Will they still be here in three years? Do their existing partners get support or get ignored?
Two or three good partnerships beat twenty affiliate links every time. Depth is what turns a referral into a book of business — the same principle behind why partnerships are the new paycheck.
For context, my own roster is small on purpose: Quo for client communication, Trainual for documenting operations, Kit for email, Gusto and Deel for people, Navan for travel. Every one of them is something I place because I already run on it.
Keep your own position
Being a partner doesn't mean being a reseller with no identity. Your brand is the diagnosis: you're the person who tells the truth about what's broken and only recommends what fixes it. That reputation is portable across every partner you ever work with.
It also protects you. Products change, programs get restructured. The relationships you built while being useful are the asset that survives all of it.
The structural read
The market is consolidating at the top. That's true, and it isn't a reason to sit out. It's a reason to plug in. The whole thesis is laid out in AI, the worker shortage, and why partnerships win the next decade.
For clients who need the technical build handled while you hold the relationship, CēSuite Digital — my own agency — is the delivery arm I use.
